Can HDMI Video be used in conjunction with Optical Audio?

Dionna Doyel: 1/2/3). = Yes if you got the below.- Make sure the devices (cable box) is outputting sound through the hdmi cable to the tv (input).- TV needs to have s/pdif optical or s/pdif coaxial output (not a s/pdif optical or s/pdif coaxial input) to s/pdif input on the receiver.- TV's menu setup -> audio setup -> select cable out -> select a digital audio out (your receiver is stereo = use pcm lossless compression = uncompressed stereo).ect- Hdmi out on devices to hdmi in on tv for tv video, then all you need is one s/pdif cable from tv out to s/pdif in on the receiver. When you upgrade your receiver, you can use the surround sound digital audio formats, but when you upgrade your receiver I prefer that it's able to do the hd surround sound formats.- 1st hdmi cable to hdmi output on device to hdmi input on receiver for surround sound audio, then 2nd hdmi cable to hdmi output on receiver to hdmi input on tv for tv video.- Receiver's menu -> manual setup -> hdmi setup ->! hdmi audio setup -> send audio to amp (not passthrough to tv)....Show more

Everette Rovinsky: Connecting all devices to the TV then connecting the TV to the receiver via optical cable will work. One optical cable is all you need. You will have to look in the TV manual if there is a setting to send audio thru the optical out. These TV's are pretty straight forward and easy to use so just go into the TV settings and look for this option. Most likely you can figure out without the manual.
