are you the cook in the house?

Hyman Coren: I board with my mother (I could be accused of being a KIPPERS - Kid In Parent's Pocket Eating Retirement Savings, though I do contribute to household expenses) and usually she cooks the meals but I bake cakes. When she was poorly for a few months at the start of last year I cooked breakfast (porridge) each day. (Not very imaginitive, but Mum didn't want more. Sundays I put sultanas or chopped dried apricot in the porridge.)I'm capable of cooking more (when I've been flatting I've been one of the best cooks in the flat) but my mother likes to assert her capability, too.
